Target Turns Bollards Into Mario and Luigi to Promote 'Mario Kart 8' for Nintendo Switch

In-Store Activity Also Features Branded Shopping Carts

Target is promoting this week's launch of "Mario Kart 8" for Nintendo Switch with an in-store experience recreating the game.

At more than 650 Target stores over the next few weeks, customers will see Target's red bollard balls (meant to stop stray cars) transformed into the game's protagonists Mario and Luigi. As they enter the store, they'll trigger motion sensors that fire up flashing lights and the unmistakable "beep beep beeeeeeeeeeep" sound that's signaled the start of the race for generations of Mario Kart fans. Finally, each store will feature a handful of shopping carts transformed into "Super Target Karts," featuring Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach.

"Experience counts -- it's what keeps guests coming in and coming back to our stores," said Scott Nygaard, senior vice president, Merchandising, Target, in a statement. "So we're delivering the fun like only Target can, giving generations of Mario fans a shopping trip they won't soon forget."

This isn't the first time that Target has transformed its bollards to promote a product. Last year, they were dressed up as Poke Balls at the height of "Pokemon Go" fever, to promote game-related goods.
