TEDxSUMMIT: The Human Arabesque Kaleidoscopic Experiment

Amsterdam creative boutique We Are Pi collaborated with director Koerner Union and choreographers Icouldneverbeadancer to create this massive human arabesque as an opener for the TEDxSummit in Doha, hosted by The Doha Film Institute. We've seen beautiful human-powered kaleidoscopic imagery previously in Ok Go's "All is Not Lost," but here, the multiplied magic is captured completely in-camera, using only the tricks afforded by a giant mirrored overhead structure, bodies and a bunch of trolleys. According to We Are Pi co-founder Jamie Kim, the project was an "endeavor of mirrors, dancers, maths and magic. Experimental ideas, contemporary art and global collaboration were the impetus for our vision: The Power of X. TED's vision is Ideas Worth Spreading while the global TEDx network puts emphasis on Ideas Worth Doing." Like We Are Pi's previous TED film that featured a brain made of ballet dancers, "we applied the 'doing' to our communications and put it at the core of our idea. So to do it for real was the only way to go," says Kim.

Inspiration came from the region's Islamic art, primarily the decorative form of the arabesque, which consists of scrolling and interlacing rhythmic linear patterns based on nature. But We Are Pi also cites previous work of the director, Koerner Union, who actually happens to be an ex-mathematician and created a kaleidoscope of animals for a Larytta music video.
