Jody Hill directs longtime collaborator Danny McBride in another MF-in badass role, The Roadie, the main character of Tenacious D's latest (NSFW) video. Here, McBride plays the ultimate on-the-road badass companion, Sebastian, who inspires Tenacious D's Jack Black and Kyle Gass to conceive a ballad that ultimately turns out to be a showstopper. The Roadie's story however, plays out a little differently.
When it came to conceiving the idea for the video, "Jack and Kyle had this cool song about a Roadie, and in the song they portray the Roadie as kind of unsung hero," explains director Hill. "We thought it would be hilarious if while they were singing this song, the Roadie is actually a total shit head."
Hill is no stranger to partnering with funny guys, having teamed with McBride on HBO's Eastbound and Down, as well as its commercial counterpart for K-Swiss. But what happens when you throw two more personalities into the mix? "I kind of knew Jack beforehand and had just met Kyle the night before the video shoot, but I had never worked with either one of them," says Hill. "I was a huge fan so I was a little nervous, but I'm happy to report that they were both awesome. They were nice and funny and open to ideas. It really was one of the best most collaborative experiences I've had in a while. Danny was hilarious as always and I'm sure he felt like I did, that working with Jack and Kyle was like working with old friends."
Overall, "collaboration in comedy is a must," Hill says. "I could write a funny script or whatever, but if the performers aren't bringing anything to the table it's not going to work. At least in my book, I try to surround myself with funny people and then create an environment where people get off by making each other laugh. That's one thing I love about my partnership with Danny. We always try to push each other and make each other laugh. The video was just an extension of what we normally do."
