The multimedia campaign from L.A. creative agency mOcean for the new TLC series L.A. Ink includes print and outdoor that puts the show's star, tattoo artist Kat Von D, in an inky retro showcase. The ads simply "focus on the beautiful photography" of Michael Elins, says mOcean CD Gregg Higgins. "We didn't see a need to clutter it with a lot of graphics; the images speak for themselves. We just wanted to create a backdrop that they could shine against." Kat Von D is already cluttered with a lot of graphics, of course, so "the audience is hit with this totally unexpected image—the contrast of a hot rocker chick combined with a classic vintage style," Higgins adds. "It tells them right away to expect something different. Beyond that, we wanted the tune-in information to really stand out—after all, that's what it's all about."
