LeBron James' return to the Cleveland Cavaliers inspired this delightfully bland front page for The New York Times' Sports Saturday page, which features a simple graphic of a "Transactions" announcement about James going to the Cavs.
According to New York Times Sports Editor Jason Stallman, "Like most of the sports desk's greatest journalism achievements, this one was inspired by The New York Post's coverage of Kimye. Kevin Quealy, a graphics editor for the Upshot, suggested we consider the Post's treatment of the Kim Kardashian-Kanye West wedding for the LeBron James news. A few hours later, the notion had evolved into using the rawest form of sports journalism: agate. So we grabbed the 'transactions' off the AP wire and Ben Hoffman, the page designer, made that our entire dress page. It told the story plainly and simply, while the entire sports universe seemed to be in convulsions."
"The question that kept getting asked was 'does anything else in sports matter today?'" Mr. Hoffman said. "Once we decided that it rose to that level of importance we thought we should do something other than just slapping a quote on top of a file photo and calling it a day. A lot of people viewed the point we were trying to make in different ways, but we were trying to convey the overwhelming significance of the story in the simplest way possible."
This is the just the latest in innovative design moves from the New York Times sports team. In January 2013, it ran this fantastic page "detailing" that year's inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
