Toshiba: Space Chair

Toshiba and Grey London take a chair into space to film the world's highest commercial.

In its latest outing for Toshiba, Grey London collaborated with The Mill to film "the world's highest commercial," shot 98,000 feet above Nevada's Black Rock desert.

To capture the spot's footage, two Toshiba hi-def IK-HR1S video cameras and a lightweight chair were suspended from a high altitude helium balloon and floated into space until the chair exploded from extreme atmospheric pressure 98,268 feet. See the making of the Space Chair spot was made here.

I was wondering when an agency would figure out a way to steal this idea for advertising purposes. I bet the two college kids that came up with this experiment didn't even get a dime!

Very cool execution! I did some digging around and apparently the ad is supposed to demonstrate how Toshiba technology can take something ordinary and make it extraordinary. The campaign was created by Grey London for the REGZA SV LCD TV Series in 2009, Toshiba’s first model to include an LED backlight with local dimming, which they claim will “redefine the armchair viewing experience”.
