The U.S. Navy has turned to Facebook for its latest recruitment campaign, as it seeks young applicants with a knack for cryptology. Through agency Lowe Campbell Ewald, it has launched Project Architeuthis, a cryptology-based game, on its Facebook page. The 18-day-long game will challenge intelligent, problem-solving individuals to track down a mysterious enemy who has captured the chief architect of a top-secret weapon in order to build their own.
The idea is that a brave Navy cryptologist has sneaked aboard their getaway sub and has only one way to send her messages: through social media. Her goal is to give away the enemy position, and her encrypted codes will be posted as a series of puzzles on social media outlets. When the final clue is presented to the community on the 18th day, an email address will also be provided and the first 10 people to provide the correct solution to the puzzle will be deemed winners. Lowe Campbell Ewald worked with specialist puzzle company Puzzability to ensure that the cryptology was hard enough to attract the best candidates.
