Cranky John McEnroe Discovers How Obsolete the Cable Guy Is in Ad for Verizon's Fios App

Spot Promotes Company's Smartphone Support Services

Editor's Pick

John McEnroe plays up to his one-time bad boy of tennis image in this spot for Verizon FIOS, promoting its smartphone support services.

The ad, by McCann, sees McEnroe call FIOS because he's confused about installing his new TV. "You can't tell me this cord isn't in. I know it's in, it's in," he says, recalling his famous arguments with umpires.

Luckily, the FIOS guy (who's sweetly unnerved by the fact he's talking to McEnroe) can guide him through the process using a smartphone app that lets the provider see exactly what's going on in the customer's home.

It's a nice way of showcasing the product, and McEnroe (who's better behaved these days as a much-respected coach and commentator) gives a decent comedic performance.
