This Powerful Ad Will Open Your Eyes to Abuse of Older Women

Domestic abuse charity Women's Aid has lined up a stellar British cast for this hard-hitting film highlighting abuse of older women, which often goes unnoticed.

Anne-Marie Duff ("Suffragette") plays the daughter of a middle class grandmother (well-known U.K. TV actress Tessa Peake-Jones) who's being abused by her husband, played by Phil Davis ("Quadrophenia"). Duff visits with the couple's grandchildren for lunch in their comfortable home, but notices nothing. Then, we see, in graphic detail, what goes on behind closed doors. The final voiceover was done by Louiza Patikas, an actress who plays domestic abuse victim Helen in BBC Radio 4's "The Archers," a storyline that has been very well-documented recently in the U.K.

Paul Andrew Williams of RSA Films directed the ad, which Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women's Aid, described in a statement as "a stark reminder that even those closest to a woman who is being abused may not know what goes on behind closed doors."

Women's Aid is encouraging people to share the PSA with the hashtag #AnyWoman. According to Neate, the charity has found that older women often do not access support or ask for help, despite domestic abuse happening to women of all ages, and wants to remind them that Women's Aid is there for them too.
