Worksafe Victoria: Electrocute

Would you obey?

Editor's Pick

If you ask your employees to do something dangerous, they'll probably do it. Naked Melbourne takes this thought (borne out of Stanley Milgram's famous 'obedience' experiment) and brings it to life in a stunt for Worksafe Victoria, the agency that enforces the Australian state's workplace injury laws and promotes safety.

Milgram's experiment found that people were very obedient, scarily so, when told to do something (like electrocute people) by an authority figure. A couple of construction workers asked passersby to pass around a live wire, and got shocked in the process. People continued to do as they were told, even though the environment was obviously dangerous.

The campaign/stunt is supported by research that showed that supervisors often will ask employees to engage in risky or dangerous tasks.
