Yahoo Japan's Clever 3.11 Search Idea Leads to Relief for Tohoku Earthquake Victimes

To mark the third anniversary of the devastating Tohuku earthquake on March 11, Yahoo Japan had a simple charity drive: it pledged to donate to relief efforts 10 yen for every person who entered "3.11" into its search engine. According to RocketNews, the cap was initially 5 million yen, which was based on data Yahoo had gathered on how many people might search via the site. But over 2.5 million searches came in -- and the company came through, donated the full 25 million yen (about $249,000) to the effort. The money goes to Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake Support Foundation.
